How to Check a Tidal Boundary
- Write down the exact river, creek, bridge, dam, marina or launch.
- Open the current Freshwater Fishing Digest boundary section.
- Identify whether the fishing point is upstream or downstream.
- Check whether the target is a freshwater or marine species.
- Save the boundary description before reaching a weak-signal area.
Do not decide by appearance. Water can be visibly tidal while still lying upstream of the official freshwater-license boundary.

How to Buy a New Jersey Fishing License Online
New Jersey uses an electronic licensing system. Each customer receives a lifetime Conservation Identification Number, or CID, that appears on licenses, permits and stamps.
Find the Existing CID Profile
Someone who previously bought a New Jersey fishing, hunting, crabbing or wildlife product may already have a CID. Search for that record before creating another customer.
Account mistake: a second profile can separate earlier products and make a license harder to retrieve.
Confirm Age and Residency
A resident generally must have lived in New Jersey for the previous six months. A New Jersey driver license is required for an online resident-license purchase.
- Use the customer’s current legal name.
- Enter the correct date of birth.
- Select resident or nonresident accurately.
- Update the mailing and email addresses.
- Do not treat property ownership alone as residency.
Complete Child Support Certification When Required
The licensing system requires the annual New Jersey Child Support Certification for covered licenses, permits and registrations. Saltwater registration has also used this certification requirement since October 2024.

Select the Correct Duration
Residents usually select the annual resident or senior product. Visitors should compare two-day, seven-day and annual coverage using all planned fishing dates.
Add Trout or Saltwater Requirements
Add the trout stamp when fishing for or possessing trout or salmon. Complete the free Saltwater Registry when the marine or tidal activity requires it.
Catch-and-release warning: releasing every trout does not remove the trout-stamp requirement.
Review, Pay and Save Proof
- The holder’s name and birth date are correct.
- The resident or nonresident status is correct.
- Every planned date is covered.
- The trout stamp or saltwater registration is included.
- The December 31 expiration is understood.
- The PDF has been downloaded or printed.

Private Ponds and Farm Waters
A freshwater license is generally required in New Jersey privately owned freshwater. Private ownership does not automatically create a license exemption.
A limited exception applies to farmers and immediate family members who live on the farm when fishing their own farm waters. Fishing regulations still apply.

New Jersey Trout Stamp and 2026 Trout Rules
A freshwater license and trout stamp are required for covered residents and nonresidents who fish for or possess trout or salmon. The rule applies even when the angler intends to release every fish.

Most trout waters are open under the applicable winter rule, commonly with a two-trout daily limit and nine-inch minimum unless a special water rule applies.

Designated trout-stocked rivers and streams are closed to fishing for all species during the preseason stocking period, subject to listed exceptions.
Stocked lakes and ponds during preseason
The former three-week closure was removed for stocked lakes and ponds. Anglers receive additional fishing days, with the current pre-opening limit applying.

Opening Day begins. The general rule allows six trout per day through May 31 in most trout waters, with a nine-inch minimum.
June 1–December 31
The general daily limit is reduced to two trout. Special waters, lake-trout rules and other exceptions can override the statewide summary.

- Opening Day is defined as the second Saturday in April.
- Trout-stocked lakes and ponds remain open during the former preseason closure.
- The preseason closure remains on listed stocked rivers and streams.

New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry
New Jersey does not issue a paid general recreational saltwater fishing license. Most saltwater anglers age 16 or older must instead register every year through the free Saltwater Recreational Registry.

A fishing license does not authorize access across private land, private shoreline use or launching from private property.
