Find the Lowest Legal Arizona License Cost
Arizona’s headline prices are simple, but the best value changes with age, residency, expected fishing days and whether the buyer actually needs hunting privileges.
Use this guide to compare the full 2026 fee structure, avoid inaccurate one-day prices and understand the trout, two-pole, Community Fishing, border-water and reprint privileges already included.
Start With the Angler’s Age and Number of Fishing Days
Three-day break-even: three resident short-term days cost $45 versus $37 annually. Three nonresident days cost $60 versus $55 annually.
Correct product name: Arizona does not list a separate adult “one-day fishing license” in the current fee table. The daily product is the Short-Term Combination Hunt and Fish License at $15 resident or $20 nonresident per selected day.

Arizona Fishing License Fees for 2026
These four products cover the main resident, nonresident, youth and short-trip searches. Arizona’s official fee table also states that the listed licenses cover Community Fishing waters.
| License | Resident fee | Nonresident fee | Validity | Best use and limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Fishing License | $37 | $55 | One year from purchase | Most adults who only need fishing privileges. |
| Combination Hunt and Fish | $57 | $160 | One year from purchase | Fishing plus listed small-game and other hunting privileges; big-game tags and some stamps remain separate. |
| Youth Combination Hunt and Fish, ages 10–17 | $5 | $5 | One year from purchase | The practical youth option for residents and visitors. |
| Short-Term Combination Hunt and Fish | $15 per day | $20 per day | Selected date or dates | One or two adult fishing days; not valid when applying in Arizona’s hunt draw. |
Flexible date detail: multiple short-term days do not have to be consecutive. The buyer chooses each covered date during purchase.
Fishing-Only Versus Combination Cost
| Buyer | Fishing only | Annual combination | Extra cost for combination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident adult | $37 | $57 | $20 |
| Nonresident adult | $55 | $160 | $105 |
| Youth age 10–17 | No separate youth fishing-only product listed | $5 | Youth combination is the low-cost product |
Nonresident cost trap: a visitor who only wants to fish usually does not need the $160 combination license. The $55 General Fishing License already includes statewide fishing, trout, two-pole and Community Fishing privileges.
After comparing the products, verify the current amounts on the official AZGFD fishing-license page.

When the Annual License Becomes Cheaper
| Adult fishing plan | Resident total | Nonresident total | Cheaper core option |
|---|---|---|---|
| One selected day | $15 short term vs $37 annual | $20 short term vs $55 annual | Short term |
| Two selected days | $30 short term vs $37 annual | $40 short term vs $55 annual | Short term |
| Three selected days | $45 short term vs $37 annual | $60 short term vs $55 annual | Annual fishing |
| Four or more days | $60+ short term vs $37 annual | $80+ short term vs $55 annual | Annual fishing |
Real Arizona Trip Examples
Lake Pleasant day trip
A resident adult fishing once can use the $15 short-term product instead of paying $37 annually, assuming no later trip is expected.
Flagstaff trout weekend
Three resident short-term dates total $45, so the $37 annual fishing license costs less and remains valid for another year.
Nonresident snowbird
A visitor expecting at least three fishing days should compare the $55 annual product with $60 or more in daily fees.
365-day value: an annual Arizona fishing license is valid for one year from purchase. A license bought in July 2026 generally continues into July 2027 rather than expiring at the end of 2026.
What an Arizona Fishing License Includes
| Privilege | Included? | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Trout fishing | Yes | Special trout waters, seasons, bait, hooks and catch-and-release requirements. |
| Two poles or lines | Yes | No more than two lines and any water-specific restriction. |
| Community Fishing Program waters | Yes | Community lake or pond bag limits and closures. |
| Covered Colorado River boundary waters | Yes | Exact shoreline, launch point, reservoir section and special-water rules. |
| Lake Powell reciprocal privilege | Yes | Current Lake Powell special regulations and National Park Service access requirements. |
| Legal aquatic wildlife beyond fish | Fishing or combination license can apply | Separate open areas, methods, seasons and limits for crayfish, frogs, waterdogs and softshell turtles. |
No obsolete stamps: the former trout, two-pole, California Colorado River, Nevada Colorado River and Utah Lake Powell reciprocal products are no longer required for a properly licensed Arizona angler.
Included does not mean unrestricted. The license gives the privilege to participate. The exact waterbody regulation decides legal bait, hooks, line count, season, size and harvest.
What the $37 or $55 License Does Not Automatically Cover
Tribal fishing permits
Tribal waters can use their own permit, fee, season and method rules. Confirm the governing tribal authority before travelling.
Park and access charges
A fishing license does not replace campground, parking, launch, concession, National Park Service or county-park fees.
Boat registration and safety rules
Watercraft registration, required safety equipment and aquatic-invasive-species requirements are separate from the angling license.
Big-game tags and migratory stamps
A combination license adds listed hunting privileges but does not include every tag, permit or migratory-bird stamp.
Who Needs an Arizona Fishing License?
Publicly accessible water
Residents and nonresidents age 10 or older generally need a valid fishing or combination license.
Child younger than 10
No Arizona state fishing license is generally required, but all fishing and harvest rules still apply.
Blind Arizona resident
The resident does not need to purchase the state fishing license. Other applicable regulations remain in force.
Private Ponds, Tanks and Waters
A state fishing license is not required when fishing a genuinely private water, tank or pond with the property owner’s permission.
Access is not the same as water ownership. A private dock, private road or paid access point beside a public lake does not automatically turn the public water into an exempt private pond.
Adult Helping an Unlicensed Child
An adult may help a child, but an adult who is actively casting, retrieving, controlling another line or taking fish should hold the correct license unless an official exemption applies.
Catch-and-Release Anglers
The requirement applies to fishing and attempting to take aquatic wildlife. Releasing every fish does not normally remove the licensing requirement.
Arizona Residency Rules for the $37 Fee
Resident pricing generally requires Arizona to be the person’s true, fixed and permanent home for the six months immediately before applying, without claiming residency for a purpose in another jurisdiction.
| Situation | Likely category | What to verify before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona domicile for six months | Resident | Permanent home and no conflicting residency claim. |
| Seasonal snowbird | Usually nonresident | Where the person maintains their true permanent residence. |
| Owns an Arizona vacation home | Not automatically resident | Property ownership alone does not establish domicile. |
| Active-duty military stationed in Arizona | Resident pricing may apply | Current active-duty station and spouse provision. |
| Active duty elsewhere with Arizona home of record | Resident pricing may apply | Official Arizona home-of-record documentation. |
Do not select resident merely to save $18. The buyer is making an eligibility representation. Ask AZGFD when domicile, military service, spouse status or another state’s residency creates uncertainty.
Fishing outside Arizona requires a separate state or provincial license. Use the state-by-state fishing license planning guide before a multi-state trip.
Pioneer, Veteran, Purple Heart and Lifetime Licenses
Special products use separate eligibility and application processes. They should be checked before an eligible person pays the normal $37 resident fishing fee.
| Option | Current fee | Main eligibility or process |
|---|---|---|
| Pioneer License | No fee | Age 70 or older plus at least 25 consecutive years of Arizona domicile immediately before applying. The license does not expire. |
| 100% Service-Connected Disabled Veteran | No fee | Permanent and total 100% service-connected disability plus at least one consecutive year of Arizona residency and official documentation. |
| Reduced-Fee Disabled Veteran | $42 | Qualifying service-connected disability below the complimentary-license threshold and the official application process. |
| Purple Heart Recipient | $28 | Qualifying recipient with at least one full year of Arizona domicile. Not available to nonresidents. |
| Resident Lifetime License | Varies by age and license class | Arizona residents only; application and purchase through an AZGFD office. |
Permanent-card detail: AZGFD issues the complimentary Pioneer or qualifying disabled-veteran paper license without charge. An optional plastic card is listed at $4.
Eligible older residents should review the official Pioneer License checklist and application requirements.
Veterans and Purple Heart recipients should use the official disabled-veteran and Purple Heart license page before choosing a regular product.
No automatic senior exemption: age 65 or 70 alone does not make every Arizona resident eligible for a complimentary license. Pioneer eligibility includes the 25-consecutive-year domicile requirement.
Community, Tribal and Border-Water License Coverage
Community Fishing Program Waters
The current General Fishing, Combination Hunt and Fish, Youth Combination and Short-Term Combination products include Community Fishing Program waters. A separate Community Fishing license is not listed in the current AZGFD fishing fee table.
Urban pond tip: do not use an older web page that tells you to buy a separate $24 Community Fishing License. Confirm current products through AZGFD and then check the individual community lake or pond limit.
Colorado River, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and Lake Havasu
Arizona fishing licenses include the former California and Nevada Colorado River stamp privileges for covered mutual-boundary portions of the river and impounded waters.
Boundary caution: that privilege does not automatically cover every tributary, marina, tribal shoreline, launch area or connected pond. Check the exact place where the line will be cast.
Lake Powell
A separately purchased Utah Lake Powell reciprocal stamp is no longer required for a licensed Arizona angler. Lake Powell still has special species limits, closures, bait restrictions and National Park Service access rules.
Tribal Waters
Many tribal waters use their own permits and regulations. Contact the governing tribal authority rather than assuming the Arizona state license substitutes for a tribal permit.
Buy the Correct Product and Keep Usable Proof
Confirm Age and Residency
Separate children younger than 10, youth ages 10–17 and adults. Snowbirds should not automatically choose resident pricing.
Count the Fishing Days
One or two adult dates may favor short term. Three or more dates normally make the annual fishing license cheaper.
Choose Fishing Only or Combination
Use General Fishing when the buyer does not need the listed hunting privileges. The nonresident combination product costs $105 more.
Check the Effective Date
Annual licenses run one year from purchase. Short-term customers choose the covered date or dates during checkout.
Review Before Payment
AZGFD states that purchased licenses cannot be returned for a refund or exchange. Recheck the customer, price class and effective date.
Print or Sync Official Proof
Online purchase provides immediate printing. The Arizona E-Tag app can also store and display fishing licenses after syncing a free AZGFD portal account.
For account login, dependents, auto-renewal and click-by-click printing help, use the Arizona Fishing License Online Guide.
Lost License: Reprint Before Buying Again
Originally bought online
Use the official online reprint route. AZGFD’s current fishing regulations state that online-purchased licenses can be reprinted without charge.
Dealer replacement
A lost license replaced through an Arizona Game and Fish Department license dealer carries an $8 replacement fee.
Use the Arizona E-Tag App Correctly
- Create or recover the correct AZGFD portal account.
- Install the current Arizona E-Tag app.
- Sync the fishing license before leaving service.
- Open the license inside the app and verify its expiration date.
- Keep the phone powered or carry printed license proof.
- Do not rely only on an unofficial screenshot of a checkout receipt.
After understanding the proof options, use the official AZGFD license reprint and account route.
For supported mobile access, review the official Arizona E-Tag app instructions.
Check the Amended 2026 Regulations After Buying
The current PDF was amended January 30, 2026. A valid license does not override the revised waterbody limits.
| Water | Amended or updated 2026 examples | Why license buyers should care |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Mead | Five trout, unlimited striped bass, 15 crappie and 25 catfish | Old screenshots or earlier printed summaries can show outdated limits. |
| Lake Mohave | Five trout, unlimited striped bass, 15 crappie and 25 catfish; location-specific spear rules apply | License coverage and legal harvest methods are separate questions. |
| Lake Pleasant | 15 crappie and unlimited striped bass; current spear rules apply | The amended PDF supersedes an older memory or summary. |
| Becker Lake | Catch-and-release trout with artificial fly or lure and single-pointed barbless hooks | A license includes trout privilege but does not allow trout harvest everywhere. |
Arizona Free Fishing Day Has Passed
Arizona’s 2026 Free Fishing Day was Saturday, June 6. The event waived the state license requirement at state waters and Community Fishing Program lakes for that date, but normal limits and other rules still applied.
Do not use the June announcement for a later trip. Fishing after June 6, 2026 requires the normal license unless another official exemption applies.
Review the official 2026 Free Fishing Day notice for that event’s exact scope.

The Arizona General Fishing License costs $55 for a nonresident. A nonresident Short-Term Combination Hunt and Fish License costs $20 for each selected day.
Is the Arizona one-day fishing license $15 or $20?
Arizona’s official short-term product is the Short-Term Combination Hunt and Fish License. It costs $15 per selected day for residents and $20 per selected day for nonresidents.

No. The purchaser selects the covered date or dates during purchase, and multiple short-term days do not have to be consecutive.

No. Arizona licenses that allow fishing include trout privileges and simultaneous fishing with two poles or lines. Water-specific gear, method and line restrictions still apply.

Residents and nonresidents age 10 or older generally need a valid fishing or combination license when fishing publicly accessible Arizona water. Children younger than 10 and blind Arizona residents do not need to purchase the state fishing license.
When does an Arizona annual fishing license expire?
Arizona annual fishing and combination licenses are valid for one year from the date of purchase. They do not automatically expire on December 31.
Can a snowbird buy the $37 Arizona resident fishing license?

How much does it cost to replace a lost Arizona fishing license?
A license purchased online can be reprinted online without charge. AZGFD’s fishing regulations list an $8 replacement fee when a lost license is replaced through an Arizona Game and Fish Department license dealer.
