Check Eligibility Before Selecting Resident Pricing
Younger than 12
No base angling or shellfish license is generally required. A free tag or endorsement can still be needed when fishing species covered by tag rules.
Youth anglers
Use the $10 Youth License. Add the $5 Youth Combined Angling Tag when fishing salmon, steelhead, sturgeon or halibut.
Adult anglers
Most adults need the appropriate resident or nonresident license plus any required tag, endorsement or validation.
Oregon Resident Does Not Simply Mean Property Owner
Oregon’s fishing definition generally requires physical residence in Oregon for at least six consecutive months immediately before applying. Merely owning Oregon property or paying Oregon property tax does not automatically qualify a person for resident pricing.
- Use the angler’s actual permanent residence.
- Do not select resident because a relative owns an Oregon home.
- Do not claim resident privileges in multiple states.
- Review military and exchange-student residency exceptions when applicable.
- Contact ODFW before paying when residency is uncertain.
Senior and Pioneer Are Separate Programs
The $34 Senior Angling License generally requires age 70 or older and Oregon residency for the previous five years. The $10 Pioneer Combination License generally requires age 65 or older and at least 50 years of Oregon residency, in addition to the current-residency requirement.
Eligibility attestation: discounted products are not ordinary age discounts. The customer is legally confirming that the applicable age and residency history are true.

How to Buy an Oregon Fishing License Online
Complete the account check before opening the product catalog. It is easier to correct an old profile before payment than to locate a license purchased under the wrong customer record.
Start From the Official ODFW Licensing System
Use MyODFW or the official Oregon licensing portal. Avoid sponsored or third-party pages that appear to sell a government license but only provide instructions or charge an extra service fee.
Verify an Existing Account
Use “Verify/Look Up Account” if the angler purchased an annual ODFW license since 2016, has preference points or may have another ODFW record.
Try the legal name, date of birth and historical address originally used. Do not create a duplicate merely because the email address changed.
Create a New Account Only When Appropriate
Create a new customer account only when the angler has never had an applicable ODFW record. Use the angler’s information—not the cardholder’s information.
Choose Account Checkout or Guest Checkout
Use an account for annual products and electronic app documents. Guest checkout can be useful for eligible daily paper licenses when the angler needs to fish immediately and has a working printer.
Guest checkout limitation: it does not create electronic documents in the MyODFW app. Save and print the purchase before closing the browser.
Choose the Correct Base License
Open “Purchase from the Catalog,” select Fishing and confirm:
- Correct customer
- Correct resident or nonresident status
- Correct age category
- Correct calendar year
- Annual, one-day, two-day, three-day or seven-day term
Add the Trip-Specific Documents
Check the species and water before checkout. The base license may need a Combined Angling Tag, Columbia River Basin Endorsement, Ocean Endorsement, Two-Rod Validation, shellfish product or Rogue–South Coast steelhead document.
Choose Paper or Electronic Proof
Paper customers print and carry documents. Electronic customers use the MyODFW app and must immediately record covered harvests, including when cell service is unavailable.
Review, Pay and Confirm the Documents

How to Renew an Oregon Fishing License Online
Oregon does not treat the annual fishing license as a rolling 365-day product. Most fishing licenses are valid from January 1 through December 31, even when purchased later in the year.
Buy the next year early
ODFW makes the next calendar year’s license available beginning December 1. Buying early can prevent January account, printer and app problems.
Old annual documents expire
A previous license can remain visible in account history after expiration. Check the document year rather than assuming the visible item is current.

You cannot keep both tag versions as backups. A harvest tag must be paper or electronic. Electronic customers may print ordinary license proof but cannot print a paper harvest tag as a backup.

Paper Tag Setup Before the Trip
- Do not shrink or resize the tag.
- Trimming excess blank border after full-size printing is allowed.
- Complete any required signature before use.
- Carry a ballpoint pen; pencil and erasable ink are unsuitable.
- Keep the tag and pen together in a waterproof bag.
- Record covered harvest immediately with no erasures.
- Never photocopy a harvest tag.
Wet-weather setup: use a resealable bag large enough to place a hand and pen inside. This lets the angler complete the tag without fully exposing it to rain, spray or river water.
Use the MyODFW App Before Cell Service Disappears
Set Up Electronic Proof at Home
- Install the current MyODFW app.
- Sign in with the same credentials used for online purchasing.
- Refresh the Recreation Portfolio.
- Confirm every license, tag, endorsement and validation.

- Charge the phone and pack a battery bank.
- Open the app again before leaving service.
Use Field Mode or Airplane Mode in Weak Service
The app can tag without internet access after the customer has logged in and synced. ODFW recommends field mode or airplane mode when weak cellular service, fish finders, cameras or other Wi-Fi-connected equipment interfere with the app.
Do not wait for service to return. Salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and other covered harvests must be recorded immediately in the app, even when the phone is offline.
One Angler, One Device
Each angler must carry their own electronic license and tag. A parent or partner generally cannot hold several electronic licenses and tags on one phone as a substitute for each person carrying their own proof.
Changing Paper and Electronic Preference
ODFW permits a customer to change between paper and electronic tagging once per calendar year. Make the change through the account profile or a license sales agent before relying on the new method.

Ocean Endorsement Decision
The annual endorsement costs $9 and the daily endorsement costs $4. It generally applies to recreational ocean marine-finfish fishing from coastal beaches, past the visible ends of jetties, from boats and while spearfishing.

Columbia Basin Endorsement Decision
Oregon-licensed anglers fishing for salmon, steelhead or sturgeon in covered Columbia Basin rivers and tributaries need the endorsement for both catch-and-release and retention.

Buying an Oregon License for a Child or Another Person
The license must be purchased under the recipient’s ODFW customer record. The person paying is not automatically the licensed angler.
Paper recipient
Paper is usually easier for a child, visitor or adult without a suitable smartphone. Print the recipient’s documents and give them directly to that person.
Electronic recipient
The recipient needs their own verified ODFW account, app login and suitable device. The purchaser cannot carry the recipient’s e-tag on the purchaser’s phone.
