How Long Is a Colorado Fishing License Valid?
Colorado annual fishing licenses follow a fixed license year. They are not automatically valid for 365 days from the purchase date.
Buying During February or March
A purchase near the end of March can accidentally select the expiring license year. Read the full product name and expiration date before payment.

Identification, Social Security Number and Residency Proof
Accepted Government Identification
Residents and nonresidents must provide valid identification. CPW accepts several categories, including qualifying driver’s licenses, state identification cards, passports, military IDs, tribal IDs and certain immigration documents.
Out-of-state digital IDs are not accepted. Colorado’s own myColorado digital driver’s license or identification may be accepted, but another state’s digital ID should not be relied on.
Review the official CPW identification list when the customer does not have a standard physical driver’s license.
Social Security or Taxpayer Identification Number
The current brochure says a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification number is required for new customers age 16 or older. It is also required for a new customer age 12 or older when purchasing a second-rod stamp.
Standard Colorado Residency Test
- The customer has lived in Colorado for at least six consecutive months immediately before purchase.
- The customer’s primary residence is in Colorado.
- The customer holds a valid Colorado driver’s license or state identification card issued at least six months ago.
- The physical address matches the address used for Colorado state income-tax purposes.
- The customer has not claimed conflicting resident hunting, fishing or trapping privileges elsewhere.
Owning Colorado property does not establish residency. A cabin, rental property or second home does not automatically qualify the owner for resident pricing.
If the Colorado ID Was Issued or Renewed Less Than Six Months Ago
The customer may need at least two different forms of supporting evidence showing six consecutive months of Colorado residence immediately before the purchase.

Apply early: the current brochure advises applicants for disability programs to apply at least 30 days before the date they want to use the license. Application submission alone is not valid fishing proof.
Can You Fish With Two Rods in Colorado?
A licensed angler or youth under 16 can buy the $14.24 annual second-rod stamp. It permits one additional personally attended rod, hand line or tip-up where legal.
What it permits
One additional line controlled by the same angler. One stamp is allowed per season and it is not transferable.
What it does not permit
It does not increase the bag limit, cover another person, allow an unattended line or override a special-water rule.
Trotline and jug distinction: CPW says the second-rod stamp is not required when the angler is only using legal trotlines or jugs. Those methods have separate water, tagging and inspection rules.

Temporary Authorization Number, Paper License and Digital Proof
Temporary Authorization Number
CPW says the TAN may be carried while the customer waits for the physical license. It is valid for 45 days after the purchase date.
Remote-water tip: print or write the TAN on paper. Do not store the only copy inside an email account that may require cellular service.
Short-Term Licenses May Not Be Mailed
When a one-day or five-day license starts within 15 days of the transaction, CPW says it will not mail a physical license. Use the TAN shown in the confirmation email.
Add Eligible Resident Proof to myColorado
- Open or install the current myColorado app.
- Sign in to the app account.

Colorado Fishing Rules After You Buy
One Personally Attended Line Is the Starting Rule
The 2026 brochure describes one personally attended line as the standard angling method, with no more than three common hooks attached. A second line requires the second-rod stamp unless a separate method rule applies.
Private Property Permission
A fishing license does not create access rights. The current brochure says it is illegal to enter private land to fish without permission, including touching private land by person or watercraft. Trespass can also lead to license suspension.

A fish released immediately does not count toward the possession limit, but the angler still needs the required license and must follow hook, bait, closure and species rules.
