Basic Fishing, Saltwater or Hook and Line?
Basic Fishing
The normal freshwater license and usual prerequisite for the Saltwater Fishing License.
It includes broad legal freshwater gear privileges such as rod and reel, certain cast nets, yo-yos, crawfish traps, slat traps, hoop nets and wire nets.
Saltwater Fishing
An additional privilege for saltwater species south of the statutory saltwater line.
It does not normally replace Basic Fishing. Combination, senior and lifetime products can include both.
Hook and Line
A limited lower-cost product for a pole or hook and line without a reel and without artificial bait.
It can also cover listed simple gear such as dip nets, landing nets, minnow traps, crab nets and crab lines.

Louisiana’s Saltwater–Freshwater License Line
Louisiana uses a legal boundary rather than daily salinity readings. Waters north of the line are deemed freshwater; waters south of it and specifically named lakes, passes and channels are legally treated as saltwater areas.

How to Check a Bayou, Canal, Lake or Launch
- Write down the exact launch, bridge, canal, road crossing, parish or bayou.
- List each species you plan to target or possess.
- Open the current regulation book’s saltwater-line description.
- Determine whether the fishing location is north or south of the legal line.
- Add Saltwater when fishing south of the line for saltwater species.
- Contact the local LDWF Enforcement Office when the boundary remains unclear.
Freshwater-fish exception: an angler fishing for and possessing only freshwater fish in a legally defined saltwater area is not required to hold the Saltwater Fishing License. An applicable Basic, senior, lifetime or other fishing privilege is still required.
Mixed marsh trip: a trip that starts with bass and later targets redfish can require the full Basic-plus-Saltwater stack. Buy for the entire trip rather than only the first stop.

A previous license, course or LDWF transaction may already have created a customer record. Search for it before creating another account.

Add Saltwater to Basic when fishing south of the saltwater line for saltwater species. Do not add it again when a senior, lifetime or combination license already includes both privileges.
Add Access and Offshore Permits
Check WMA access, WMA camping, ROLP and saltwater bowfishing separately. A fishing license does not automatically complete every access, gear or species requirement.

WMA Camping Party Rule
One camping permit covers a party of up to five adults age 18 or older. Groups with more than five adults need additional permits. Youth age 17 and younger do not count toward the adult permit requirement.
Self-Clearing Check-In
- Complete the check-in portion before beginning the activity.
- Deposit the check-in portion at the permit station.
- Carry the check-out portion while on the property.
- Complete and deposit it immediately when leaving.
Some boaters entering from outside the property and remaining entirely in the vessel may qualify for a self-clearing exception. Do not assume that exception removes the WMA Access Permit or fishing-license requirement.
