Why some competitors show lower prices: they quote only the fishing privilege and omit the annual certificate. Add the certificate unless the customer already purchased it for the current license year.

Understand the Required Annual Certificate
North Dakota’s Fishing, Hunting, Furbearer Certificate is a separate annual prerequisite. It normally costs $2 for a resident and $5 for a nonresident.

Do Not Pay for the Certificate Twice
- Open the correct customer’s account.

Couple-license caution: the official fee table shows a married-couple fishing fee and a certificate column, while its note says the certificate is purchased per licensee. Let the official cart determine what each spouse still needs rather than forcing an unofficial combined total.

Youth rules differ by residency. A resident child’s basic exemption does not require accompaniment. A nonresident child under 16 relies on being accompanied by a licensed person.
North Dakota Residency and Special Eligibility
Resident pricing generally requires that the person has lived in or maintained legal residence in North Dakota for the previous six months and is not claiming residency elsewhere.
Adult Resident Identification
An adult applying for resident pricing should be prepared to provide a valid North Dakota driver’s license number or North Dakota nondriver photo-identification number.
Residency Waiver
A person with a genuine intention to become a North Dakota resident may be eligible to apply for a waiver for nonlottery products before completing the normal six-month period.

Military applicant
North Dakota residents on active-duty leave and certain personnel stationed in the state can have special exemption or waiver routes.
Full-time student

Create or Access the Correct Account
Use an existing account when the customer has bought a North Dakota license before. Avoid creating a duplicate profile because an older license is difficult to find.
Select the Correct License Customer
The system can support a purchase for the account owner or another person when the required customer information is available. Confirm whose name will appear on the license.
Confirm Residency and Personal Information
Review the address, residency and identification information. The system may ask a non-U.S. citizen for a passport number and may request missing Social Security information.

Pay, Print and Save the Purchase Summary
Enter payment details and submit once. On the purchase-summary screen, select View or View All to open the PDF containing the license and receipt.
Do not pay again after a screen error. Check My Account, purchased licenses and the card transaction first. Call licensing support when a charge appears but no license is available.
Print, Download or Show the License on a Phone
Print Immediately After Purchase

- Print at normal scale or save the PDF.
- Check the customer name, license year and products.
Retrieve the License Later
Sign in to My Account and open the purchased-license area. NDGF says customers can view, download and print their licenses at any time.
Store Digital Proof Before Leaving Home
A digital image of the fishing license stored on a mobile device is accepted. The NDGF app can download licenses, certifications and regulations for offline retrieval.
- Download the license while connected to the internet.
- Open the file once before travelling.
- Check that the correct customer profile is displayed.
- Verify the April–March validity dates.
- Charge the phone and carry a backup for remote or cold-weather trips.
New Customers Cannot Create a Profile Inside the App
The mobile app can add an existing NDGF profile using the person’s name, date of birth and either the last four Social Security digits or driver’s-license number. A completely new customer profile must first be created through the Online Services website.
Profile-not-found fix: enter information exactly as it appears in the existing NDGF customer record. If the app still cannot locate it, call the Licensing Division at 701-328-6335.

How North Dakota Fishing License Renewal Works
The 2026–27 fishing license is valid from April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027. Buying it later in the fishing year does not extend its expiration by 365 days.
Watch the March 31 and April 1 Changeover
- Open My Account before the current license expires.
- Check the year printed on the active license.
- Update the customer’s address and residency.
- Purchase the new fishing-year product.
- Add the new annual certificate when required.
- Download the new license and remove easy-access copies of the expired one.
Ice-fishing example: an ice trip on March 31 uses the expiring license. A trip on April 1 requires the new license even when the lake is still frozen.

Does North Dakota Have a One-Day Fishing License?
The current official tables do not list a standard one-day recreational product. A search result or resort article may show a one-day price, but the official three-day product is the shortest standard nonresident option currently published.
Married-Couple License Decision
North Dakota lists a $42 resident married-couple product and a $108 nonresident married-couple season product. Compare those fees with the number of days both spouses will actually fish.
Do not calculate the final couple total outside the cart. Confirm each spouse’s customer profile and existing annual-certificate status before payment.

Paddlefish and Darkhouse Spearfishing Rules
Paddlefish Snagging Requires a Separate Tag
Every paddlefish snagger must possess a paddlefish tag. A person age 16 or older also needs the regular fishing license and annual certificate.

2026 status: the harvest season closed May 8, 2026 at 7 p.m. Central Time. The following snag-and-release opportunity also ended in May. Do not assume a purchased tag creates another 2026 opportunity.

Darkhouse Registration Was Removed
The 2026–28 rule changes eliminated the former darkhouse-spearfishing registration requirement. A valid fishing license is still required for an angler age 16 or older, and all current equipment, species and waterbody rules still apply.
Darkhouse Season and Closed Waters
The signed proclamation sets the darkhouse spear and bow-fishing season from November 15 through March 15. It also lists waters where the method is not allowed.

Out-of-State Motorized Boats Need a $15 ANS Sticker
A motorized watercraft not licensed in North Dakota must obtain an annual, nonrefundable Aquatic Nuisance Species sticker before operating on North Dakota waters.
Fee is per vessel
The sticker is separate from every angler’s fishing license and certificate.
Calendar-year product
The sticker follows the calendar year, while the fishing license follows April 1 through March 31.
How to Buy and Display the Sticker

- Open Watercraft.
- Select Purchase Aquatic Nuisance Sticker.
- Enter the owner name, registration state and registration number.
- Save the receipt as temporary proof while waiting for the sticker.
- Display the sticker on the starboard side within six inches of the registration number within 10 days.

Free does not mean rule-free. The resident fishing-license requirement is waived, but limits, bait rules, method restrictions and special tag requirements remain in force.
Rules to Check After Buying the License
The 2026–28 proclamation controls fishing methods, bait, limits, possession and transport. A valid license does not override a water-specific restriction.
Do Not Import Live Aquatic Bait
Live aquatic organisms—including fish, amphibians, aquatic insects and aquatic invertebrates—may not be imported into North Dakota for use as bait.

- An ice hole larger than 10 inches must be marked when the area is vacated.

Label Gifted or Transported Fish Correctly
When fish are gifted, the package should include the donor’s name, fishing-license number, telephone number, date, species and number of fish. Processed fish must remain packaged so the number and species can be determined.
