Which Texas Fishing Package Should You Buy?
Reservoir, lake, river or inland pond
Start with the freshwater package unless an exemption, Lake Texoma license or one-day option fits better.
Bay, jetty, surf, Gulf or coastal water
Start with the saltwater package. It already includes the saltwater endorsement and applicable oversized-fish tags.
Freshwater and coast in one license year
The all-water package is normally cheaper and simpler than buying separate freshwater and saltwater packages.
One-Day Visitors
The one-day all-water product is useful when the person will fish only one selected day. It covers both freshwater and saltwater, so separate endorsements are not required.
Visitor math: a nonresident one-day license is $16. Four one-day purchases total $64 before administrative fees, close to the $68 annual all-water package. Repeated separate online transactions can also repeat the $5 fee.
Buying Close to August 31
Most standard packages expire August 31. New license-year packages normally go on sale August 15, so a July or August buyer should check the year shown in checkout rather than assuming twelve months of coverage.

Oversized Red Drum and Spotted Seatrout
A saltwater endorsement provides a red drum tag and spotted seatrout tag. A tag is required to retain one fish of the applicable species longer than 28 inches during the license year.

Texas Resident Status
TPWD generally defines a Texas resident as a person who has lived continuously in Texas for more than six months immediately before purchase, with separate rules for documented Kickapoo Traditional Tribe members and qualifying active-duty military members and dependents.
Property ownership is not enough: owning a Texas home, ranch or vacation property does not by itself prove the six-month resident requirement.

TPWD allows license-free fishing from qualifying state-park property and waters completely enclosed by a state park. Park entry fees can still apply, and all normal bag and length limits remain in effect.

A fishing license is not required on water completely enclosed within private property. Permission to stand on private land beside a public lake does not convert the public water into private water.
