Do Not Buy the Wrong Texas License Year
Before August 15, most regular fishing packages available for the current license year expire August 31, 2026. New annual licenses become available August 15 for the license year beginning September 1.

Catch-and-release note: Texas regulates fishing and attempting to take aquatic life. Releasing every fish does not normally remove the license and endorsement requirement.

Check Age and Exemptions
Anglers under 17, qualifying residents born before January 1, 1931 and people fishing entirely within a Texas State Park may not need an ordinary package.

Most Texas fishing licenses do not auto-renew. You purchase the package for the next license year through the same official sales system.

Texas Fishing License ID and Residency Rules
Effective August 3, 2026
- Each recreational-license buyer age 17 or older must satisfy the updated ID rules.
- An in-person buyer must be physically present.
- An unexpired REAL ID from a U.S. state or territory satisfies the stated identification requirement.
- Temporary or limited-term identification requires additional documentation.
- Each online holder must complete independent ID validation.
- Foreign residents are not eligible for online purchases.
Texas Resident Test
A resident generally must have lived continuously in Texas for more than six months immediately before buying. Specific provisions also cover documented Kickapoo Traditional Tribe members and qualifying active-duty military members and dependents.
Address alone is not enough: owning Texas property, using a relative’s address, attending school temporarily or recently moving does not automatically satisfy the six-month definition.
Possible Supporting Residency Records
TPWD’s live requirements page identifies records such as utility bills, paycheck receipts, a recent tax return, homestead-tax statement, voter registration or vehicle registration. The records must meet the page’s age, name and physical-address conditions.
Social Security Number Issue
Federal and Texas law require collection of an SSN for most applicants. Children age 13 or younger may decline to provide one. TPWD provides an affidavit for a person who is not required to have an SSN.
Do not enter an invented number. Contact TPWD or use the official affidavit process when the applicant is legally not required to have a Social Security number.

Lake Texoma License Rules
The $12 Lake Texoma License permits fishing in both the Texas and Oklahoma portions of Lake Texoma without an additional Texas or Oklahoma fishing license.
