GO ID, Customer Record and Identification Help
The permanent GO ID links purchases to the customer’s CDFW record. Reusing the correct record helps preserve old licenses, lifetime privileges, report cards and app access.
Commonly Accepted Identification
The current ocean regulations booklet lists several acceptable identification routes, including:
- An existing CDFW license document or permanent GO ID
- A valid state driver’s license or identification card
- A U.S. birth certificate or report of birth abroad
- A U.S. passport
- U.S. military identification
- A tribal identification card issued by a sovereign tribal nation
- A certificate of naturalization or citizenship
- A qualifying foreign-government photo identification
An applicant under 18 may use an accepted personal document or, where allowed, a parent or legal guardian’s identification.
Customer Record Cannot Be Found
- Use the legal name entered during the original purchase.
- Try the previous address or identification type connected to the record.
- Check an old license for the GO ID.
- Search the official customer-retrieval route before registering again.
- Contact CDFW when the lifetime privilege or past purchase remains missing.
Do not create repeated profiles. Duplicate customer records can separate a current purchase from an older license, report card or lifetime entitlement.
California Resident vs Nonresident License Rules
CDFW generally treats a person as a resident after continuous California residence for at least six months immediately before applying. Qualifying active-duty military personnel and Job Corps enrollees are also addressed in the state definition.

A validation changes where or how an angler may fish. A report card records fishing activity for a particular species and normally must be carried physically and reported after its validity period.

Bought the Validation Later?
If a validation is purchased separately after the sport-fishing license, CDFW can issue it on a separate Fishing Privilege Only document. That validation has its own 365-day validity period and may expire on a different date from the base license.
Carry both records. When the license and validation are on separate documents, both must be available while fishing unless the supported items are displayed correctly through the official app.
Report cards apply beyond base-license holders. Children, Free Fishing Day participants and public-pier anglers can still need the applicable card or crab-trap validation.
California Sturgeon Card and Season Changes
White sturgeon fishing is catch-and-release only. Green sturgeon may not be targeted or kept, and any incidentally caught green sturgeon must be released immediately.

- Use only one single-point, single-shank barbless hook.
- Do not troll, snag, gaff or snare sturgeon.

- Keep prohibited green sturgeon in the water and release immediately.

California Public Pier Fishing Without a License
A sport fishing license is generally not required when recreationally fishing from a qualifying public pier in ocean or bay waters. A marina dock, sea wall, private pier or nearby rock area does not automatically qualify.

Rod and Gear Limit
CDFW generally allows no more than two rods and lines, two hand lines, or two crab-taking appliances per person on a public pier, subject to stricter species-specific rules.
No Ocean Enhancement Validation is required on a qualifying public pier. Other fishing regulations, report cards and crab-trap rules remain active.

The official app can display supported licenses and validations. It cannot turn an ordinary screenshot into valid proof, and it does not replace a required physical report card.

Online Reporting Workflow
- Wait until the card’s final day of validity has passed.
- Sign in to the existing CDFW customer record.
- Select Harvest Reporting.
- Enter every activity line, including trips with no catch.
- Finish within the system’s 20-minute session window.
- Save the confirmation number.
- Write that number on the physical card.
- Keep the card for 90 days after the deadline.
- Do not use the card again after reporting it.
Mail risk: a mailed card that CDFW does not receive can be treated as unreported. Consider trackable mail or use online reporting and save the confirmation.
