Find Your GO ID and Avoid Duplicate Records
A GO ID is the unique number attached to the customer’s Automated License Data System record. It appears on CDFW-issued documents and can be used to retrieve the record.
Search Before Creating a New Record
- Check an old California fishing or hunting license for the GO ID.
- Use the legal last name and date of birth shown on the old record.
- Try the identification type originally used, such as DMV ID, passport or military ID.
- Check whether the customer previously used a different address or email.
- Contact CDFW when the system cannot locate a record you know exists.
Do not create a second customer record merely because search fails. Duplicate profiles can separate licenses, report cards, preference points and harvest reports.
Information Needed for a New Customer
The online system can request the person’s legal name, residence address, residency status, accepted identification, date of birth, height, weight, hair color and eye color.
Buying for Someone Who Already Has a Record
Prepare the recipient’s last name, date of birth and the identification already stored in the system, such as GO ID, DMV ID, passport, green card or military identification.
Use the official CDFW customer-record search after gathering the correct identifying information.

Confirm Residency and Age
Choose resident pricing only when the angler meets California’s six-month, military or Job Corps residency definition. Most people age 16 or older need a license.

How to Print and Fish Without Waiting for the Mail
365-Day Online License
After checkout, print the temporary sport-fishing license. CDFW states that it is valid immediately and can be used for up to 30 days while the permanent license is mailed.
Short-Term License
A one-day, two-day or ten-day license is printed at the end of checkout and begins on the date selected in the transaction.
Printer Checklist
- Use a supported current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
- Allow pop-ups and PDF downloads.
- Confirm the printer has paper and readable ink.
- Save the PDF before closing the browser.
- Check the name, GO ID, dates and every validation.
- Keep the receipt and transaction number.
CDFW’s online-sales instructions still require a working printer for temporary and short-term documents. Do not assume an email receipt is the fishing license.

Create the Mobile Account
The mobile user account is separate from the CDFW customer record. Create the app account, verify the email, set a password and associate the correct customer record using last name, birth date and accepted identification.
Prepare for Offline Use
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
- Open the correct associated customer record.
- Tap the refresh link on the welcome screen.
- Open My Active Licenses and verify each item.
- Repeat the refresh for every associated family record.
- Charge the phone and carry backup power.
Screenshots, photos and saved images are not valid electronic display. The license must be shown through the official CDFW License App.
Report Cards Are Different
The app may display proof that a report card was purchased, but this is not the report card. The physical report card must generally remain in the angler’s immediate possession.
Practical backup: carry the physical license until you are confident the phone, app login, customer switching and offline refresh all work reliably.

Manual Renewal and Auto-Renewal
Manual Renewal
Check the expiration date on the active license. Purchase the next 365-day license before the current one ends rather than automatically buying every January.
Set Up Auto-Renewal
- Add and verify a valid email address.
- Enable Customer Record Security Settings.
- Create the customer-record password.
- Add a Visa or Mastercard payment method.
- Select each eligible license, validation or report card.
- Verify the mailing address.

CDFW staff cannot reset a Customer Record Security Settings password. Use the online password-reset process and keep access to the verified email address.
Auto-Renewal does not cancel harvest reporting. A spiny lobster card can renew with the $21.60 non-return fee when the prior card was not reported by the deadline.
Ocean Enhancement, Second Rod and Crab Trap Validation
The three standard sport-fishing validations are valid for 365 days from purchase. Buying one later than the base license can create a different expiration date.
Fishing Privilege Only Document
When a validation is purchased separately, CDFW prints it on a Fishing Privilege Only document. Carry both the base sport-fishing license and the separate privilege document.
Ocean Enhancement
The validation is generally required in ocean waters south of Point Arguello in Santa Barbara County. A one-day or two-day sport-fishing license is exempt.
Second Rod
The validation allows two rods or lines in eligible inland waters. It does not permit two rods where artificial-lure, barbless-hook, one-rod or other special restrictions apply.
Youth note: CDFW states that a child under age 16 may fish with two rods in inland waters without purchasing the validation, except where special water restrictions prohibit it.
Crab Trap Validation
The validation applies to taking crab with qualifying crab traps. It is not required when using hoop nets or crab loop traps. Beginning January 1, 2026, anglers using crab traps from a Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel are no longer required to possess it.
California Sport-Fishing Report Cards
Every person fishing for a covered species must have the correct report card, including a child under 16, a person fishing from a qualifying public pier and a person fishing on a Free Fishing Day.

Online Reporting Rules
- Online reporting is available only after the last day of the card’s validity.
- Enter every card line, including fishing activity with no catch.
- Complete the online submission within 20 minutes to avoid a timeout.
- Save the confirmation number.
- Write the confirmation number on the physical card.
- Retain the card for 90 days after the reporting deadline.
- Do not use a card in the field after it has been reported.

Spiny lobster penalty: not returning or reporting the card by April 30 can add a $21.60 non-return fee to the next season’s card.

White Sturgeon Report Card Changes
California changed the sturgeon report-card season to align with the updated catch-and-release fishery.

Field Recording
- Complete the required date and location information before beginning fishing activity.
- Record released sturgeon immediately using the applicable length and species fields.
- Start a new entry when changing location codes.
- Record hours fished at the end of activity for that location.
- Check local closures before every trip.
Do not use the older January 31 calendar-year assumption for the new seasonal sturgeon card. Follow the current seasonal card and July 31 reporting instructions.
Public Pier Fishing and 2026 Free Fishing Days
Qualifying Public Piers
A sport-fishing license is generally not required when angling from a qualifying public pier in ocean or bay waters. A beach, private dock, ordinary seawall, harbor walkway or nonqualifying structure is not automatically a public pier.
Species report cards remain required. Public-pier anglers still need a physical report card when fishing for spiny lobster, sturgeon or another covered species.

Who Needs a License and Who May Qualify for Reduced Fees?
Standard Age Rule
A person age 16 or older generally needs a valid sport-fishing license when taking or attempting to take fish, shellfish, amphibians or reptiles in California.
California Resident Definition
CDFW generally treats as a resident a person who continuously resided in California for at least six months immediately before applying, qualifying active-duty military personnel, or a person enrolled in Job Corps.
A California address alone does not prove resident status. Contact CDFW when domicile, military assignment or temporary residence creates uncertainty.

Buy a License or Resident Gift Voucher for Another Person
Direct License Purchase
For a recipient with an existing customer record, prepare the last name, date of birth and identification already on file. For a new recipient, prepare full identity, residence and physical-description information.
Resident Gift Voucher
A guest customer can purchase a voucher redeemable for a resident 365-day sport-fishing license.
The voucher itself is not fishing authority. The recipient must redeem it for a license before fishing.
- Confirm the recipient qualifies as a California resident.
- Use the recipient’s correct legal name and date of birth.
- Search for an existing record first.
- Save the voucher number.
- Redeem within 365 days of voucher purchase.
- The issued license will then run for 365 days from redemption.

Lost Report Card Rules
A replacement report card does not simply copy all entries from the lost card. The lost card must still be reported by its deadline using the online lost-card method or an affidavit containing the customer’s name, GO ID, best recollection of prior catches and circumstances of the loss.
Write down or photograph card entries regularly. A private backup does not replace the physical card, but it helps reconstruct required lost-card reporting.
Refund Policy
CDFW states that sport-fishing licenses, vouchers, validations and report cards are nonrefundable. Review the customer, duration and add-ons before submitting payment.
