Which New Mexico Fishing License Should You Buy?
Annual fishing
Start with the $25 annual fishing license. An angler age 18 or older generally also needs the $4 HMAV.
One fishing day
Start with the $12 one-day fishing license. Check HMAV, federal-land Habitat Stamp and two-rod needs before checkout.
Compare the $24 five-day product
The five-day product usually costs less than buying two or more separate one-day licenses.
Check junior annual pricing
Junior annual fishing costs $5 for a resident and $15 for a nonresident. HMAV is not required through age 17.
Senior annual costs $8

Free annual fishing privilege
Qualifying residents age 70 or older can obtain a free annual license and do not need HMAV, Habitat Stamp or Second Rod Validation with that privilege.

Use the existing username or Customer ID when the angler has purchased before. Create a new account only for a genuinely new customer.
One holder per account: licenses are issued in the account holder’s name. To buy for several people, log out and use each person’s separate account.
Select the Correct License Year
Choose the April-through-March license year covering the fishing date. This is especially important when buying during late March or early April.
Choose the Base Fishing Product
Select annual, one-day, five-day, junior, senior or another approved product. Compare age-based annual prices before choosing an ordinary short-term license.
Add the Correct Stamps and Validations
HMAV may be added automatically when required. The buyer must still decide whether the fishing location and method require a Habitat Stamp, Second Rod Validation or free Gila Trout permit.

How to Renew a New Mexico Fishing License
Annual fishing licenses expire March 31. Renewing means purchasing the fishing product for the new license year beginning April 1; reprinting the old document does not extend it.

HMAV Is Not the Habitat Stamp
HMAV means Habitat Management and Access Validation. It is generally required once each license year for an angler age 18 or older and is normally added to the first applicable cart.
Cart misunderstanding: HMAV appearing in the cart does not mean the Habitat Stamp is also active.
When the Habitat Stamp Applies
The Habitat Stamp is generally required for an angler age 12 or older fishing on U.S. Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management property.
- Identify the exact water and access point.
- Check which agency manages the surrounding property.
- Do not assume every mountain water is on Forest Service land.
- Do not assume every public water requires a Habitat Stamp.
- Ask NMDOW when the access route crosses several land jurisdictions.
Fishing With Two Rods
An angler age 12 or older needs the Second Rod Validation to use two rods. The validation does not increase the daily bag or possession limit.
Maximum two rods: buying more than one validation does not authorize three rods.
