New Jersey Fishing License Age Rules
Anglers Under 16
A child under 16 generally does not need the freshwater license. New Jersey also allows a child who turns 16 during the calendar year to continue fishing without the license through December 31 of that year.
Example: a child who turns 16 in July 2026 may continue fishing without the license through December 31, 2026. The license becomes necessary beginning January 1, 2027.

Residents Age 65–69

New Jersey Saltwater Registration Is Not a Fishing License
New Jersey does not charge a state saltwater fishing-license fee. Instead, qualifying anglers complete the free New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry each year.

Wading detail: standing on the stream or lake bottom can involve the landowner’s property rights. Remaining afloat does not automatically create permission to launch or exit across private land.
