Nonresident Breakpoints Are Less Obvious
A ten-day nonresident license costs $64.54. Two ten-day licenses cost $129.08, still below the $174.14 nonresident annual license. A third ten-day license would cost $193.62, so the annual license becomes the lower base price for 21–30 consecutive days.
Split-trip tip: short-term licenses cover selected or consecutive dates. Two ten-day licenses may be useful for separate trips, but confirm the start date on each transaction before paying.
Southern California Ocean Cost
One-day and two-day licenses do not require Ocean Enhancement. A ten-day or 365-day license normally needs the $7.30 validation when fishing ocean waters south of Point Arguello in Santa Barbara County.

Cash and Telephone Purchase Details
CDFW regional and License and Revenue Branch offices do not accept cash. Authorized local license agents can accept cash for items they sell. Telephone purchases are available at (800) 565-1458, and the regulation booklet says telephone items are delivered by mail within 15 days.
Last-minute trip warning: do not rely on telephone mail delivery for a trip starting tomorrow. Buy online and print valid proof, use the official app, or call an authorized agent that can issue the item in person.
Who Needs a California Fishing License?
A person age 16 or older generally needs a valid sport-fishing license while taking or attempting to take covered fish, shellfish, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles or other aquatic wildlife.

California Residency for the Lower Annual Price
The official booklet defines a resident as a person who has lived continuously in California for at least six months immediately before applying, a person on active U.S. military duty or an auxiliary branch, or a Job Corps enrollee.
Do not select resident only because you own property or have a California mailing address. Use the official residency definition and contact CDFW if the situation is unclear.
Fishing From a California Public Pier Without a License
A sport-fishing license is not required when recreationally angling from a structure that legally qualifies as a public pier in ocean or bay waters.
The Structure Must Generally Be
- Publicly owned.
- Connected above mean high tide to the mainland or a named natural island.
- Open with free, unrestricted public access.
- Built or currently functioning primarily to provide angling access.
Not Every Coastal Structure Qualifies
Private piers, marina docks, promenades, seawalls, ordinary jetties and breakwaters that are not the most seaward protective boundary of an ocean harbor do not automatically qualify.
Landing a fish from the beach: CDFW says a license is required if an unlicensed pier angler leaves the qualifying pier and goes onto the beach to land the fish. A pier net can help land larger fish while remaining on the pier.
Public-Pier Gear and Document Rules
- No more than two rods and lines, two hand lines, or two crab-taking appliances per person.
- Species-specific gear restrictions still apply.
- A Spiny Lobster Report Card is required when taking lobster.
- A Sturgeon Fishing Report Card is required when fishing for sturgeon.
- Seasons, size limits and bag limits remain enforceable.

Lake Tahoe, Topaz Lake and Colorado River License Rules
Border waters can allow a neighboring state’s license, but the accepted license and fishing rules depend on the exact water.

Border-water caution: an accepted license does not automatically make every method, bait, season or harvest rule identical on both sides.
Validations and Report Cards That Add to the Cost
Ocean Enhancement Validation
Add $7.30 when fishing ocean waters south of Point Arguello under a ten-day or 365-day license. It is not required with a one-day or two-day sport-fishing license or while fishing under the public-pier exception.
Second-Rod Validation
The $20.26 validation allows two rods or lines in many inland waters. It does not allow two rods where a special rule permits only artificial lures, barbless hooks or one rod.
Child detail: CDFW says a child under 16 may use two rods in eligible inland waters without buying the validation, but the same special-water restrictions still apply.
Recreational Crab Trap Validation
The $2.98 validation is required for a person taking crab with a qualifying crab trap. It is not required for hoop nets or crab loop traps. Beginning January 1, 2026, anglers using crab traps from a Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel are exempt from this validation.
Species Report Cards
The appropriate physical report card is required for every person fishing for covered species, including a child under 16, a public-pier angler and a person fishing on a Free Fishing Day.
The app is not the report card. It can display proof that a report card was purchased, but the physical card must remain in the angler’s immediate possession while fishing under that card.

A license, validation or tag can be purchased for another person when the purchaser provides the other person’s CDFW customer identification number and date of birth.
When You Have the Angler’s Customer Information

- Select the angler’s residency, not the purchaser’s residency.
- Choose dates based on the angler’s trip.

When You Do Not Have the GO ID
CDFW allows a gift voucher that can be redeemed for a resident 365-day sport-fishing license. The voucher is not itself a fishing license, is nonrefundable and is valid for redemption for 365 days from purchase.
Gift limitation: the standard gift voucher is for a resident 365-day sport-fishing license. Do not use it as a substitute for a nonresident or short-term visitor license.
